Description: Using the Pharmaceutical Literature is a guide to information resources needed by those researching pharmaceutical topics in the medical and pharmaceutical literature. The text of each chapter is nicely balanced with an introductory narrative, followed by an annotated bibliography of relevant professional associations, databases, journals, and web sites.
Purpose: This reference guide is directed at information specialists who support the work of the pharmaceutical industry. There is little material here from the realm of clinical medicine, focusing, instead, on pharmacy practice and pharmacological resources. Srodin has corralled the work of nine authors from the corporate library arena who demonstrate their working knowledge of the resources they describe. There is a similar format for each chapter, but individual authors have varied that as needed.
Audience: This is an important addition to the field for anyone providing information and intellectual support for pharmaceutical R&D. It will become a standard reference in academic libraries supporting pharmacy programs and pharmaceutical science departments. Because of its readability, it could be used as a training manual for new staff in a pharmaceutical corporate information center or research department.
Features: The volume brings together valuable information for those seeking pharmaceutical information resources for research in genomics and proteomics, toxicology, pharmacoeconomics, and pharmacology. Chapters cover a wide variety of topics including patents, intellectual property rights, competitive intelligence, marketing, and medical devices. The two indexes - subjects and resources - and the detailed contents listing make this a good resource for quick reference in any setting. Both indexes have numerous "see" references, providing access by both acronyms and full names as needed. The annotated bibliographic entries are especially valuable because their succinct writing focuses on the unique features of a particular product including recommended search terms.
Assessment: Bonnie Snow is one of the authors contributing to this title. Her own book - Drug Information: A Guide to Current Resources, (2d ed., MLA/Scarecrow Press, c1999; ISBN 0-8108-3321-2) - is the standard reference for this area, but is now somewhat dated, especially with regard to Internet resources. The Srodin title will supplement and update Snow in many areas, and both are now recommended as standards for pharmacy collections.
