Description: As the authors point out, the rise in sports participation and specialization among today's youth has coincided with an increase in the number of injuries, particularly overuse injuries. This book describes common acute and chronic upper extremity injuries in the young athlete.
Purpose: The book's primary purpose is to describe sports-specific injury patterns across popular youth sports and explain their prevention, diagnosis, treatment. These are very worthy objectives and the book succeeds to a good degree in achieving them.
Audience: The most appropriate audience is sports medicine-inclined residents and sports fellows and attending practitioners who regularly care for pediatric to collegiate-age athletes. The authors are pediatric hand and upper extremity orthopedic surgeons. Both would be considered educational experts in their fields with numerous, notable publications and presentations to their names and positions at Boston Children's Hospital.
Features: Most of the 12 chapters focus on a specific sport and the joint commonly injured in that sport (e.g. "The Pitcher's Elbow," "Swimmer's Shoulder," "Gymnasts Wrist"). This structure is well suited to achieving the book's objective: discussing how the demands of a sport can create pathological patterns that lead to acute or chronic injury, and therefore how providers could go about treating and preventing that injury. The only problem is that upper extremity pathology doesn't always fit neatly into this sports-specific organization. Swimmers develop elbow pain and gymnasts develop shoulder pain participating in their sports. For the sake of maintaining this chapter structure, these details are missed. The book seems to acknowledge this limitation and the structure changes later on to broader chapters such as "Common Sports Hand Injuries" and "Upper Extremity Nerve Injuries." Because the 12 chapters are written by about 20 different contributors, there is a noticeable variation in the writing style and to some degree the organization of each chapter. This naturally makes it feel like a curated collection of separate journal publications. Each chapter is not so long that I couldn't reasonably digest it in one sitting, and not so short that I felt shortchanged in terms of the depth with which the topic is treated. Most chapters effectively use colorful, descriptive, and well-labeled images that illustrate basic anatomy, injury mechanisms, physical exam maneuvers/findings, and diagnostic imaging. However, some chapters lack these images, such as "Footballer's Shoulder," which contains only management algorithms.
Assessment: Overall, the book does a good job of helping medical providers better understand the unique demands of their patients' sports. Coming from a swimming, cycling, and running background, I have no personal athletic experience in how the physical demands of a sport like gymnastics could result in injury. This acts as a barrier to my understanding of the sport's unique patterns and pathology. This book helps overcome this better than any general sports medicine textbook (e.g. ACSM's Sports Medicine: A Comprehensive Review, O'Connor et al. (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2013)) and I imagine it will enable medical providers to better understand and care for a wide variety of athletic youth.
