Overview

Free fear and guaranteed marvel!
A collection of some of the absolute best short stories of science fiction, fantasy, and horror since 2014. Award-winning, critically acclaimed author Mord McGhee is one of the most distinctive and magnetic voices in contemporary fiction. While his tales tend to be provocative and intense, they are also wonderfully eclectic and introduce the reader to the wildly unimaginable. Many stories included in McGhee's first collection of short fiction have appeared in literary, commercial, and magazines around the globe during the years 2014-2016. Up From the Black is an instant classic, in the tradition of the Twilight Zone, Weird Tales, and Creepshow.
In 'Up From the Black' (Mord McGhee's first collection of short fiction) we catch glimpses of that which lives in the darkest shadows; a glorious thrill-ride of action, adventure, and supernatural coincidences. Some of the themes are a post-apocalyptic invasion of Earth where the only thing holding humanity together is a long hummed earworm... a blood red moon rises one dark night and a cat saves the world... a spontaneous street fair exhibits the most bizarre and disturbing treats... creatures lurk in the abyss where vacuums exist... and many, many more!
"'Up from the Black' is Mord McGhee at his horrifying, fantastical best."
'Up from the Black' is a new collection by McGhee, who has made Medium.org's Top 500 Must-read Thriller's of All-Time (Murder Red Ink, TSP2014), won a 2014 Dan Poynter's Silver Science Fiction Award (Ghosts of San Francisco, TSP2014), and was a Silver Falchion Finalist in Young Adult Fiction Award & a Newbery Medal nominee (Old Flames and Heroes, TSP2016). Several stories within this collection were also Top Ten finishers at Critters.org Reader's Choice Awards. (Preditors & Editors 2014-2017).
"'Up from the Black' is not simply a collection to read, it is a collection in which we celebrate American literature today."
