About the Author

DAVID SHAVIT is Associate Professor of Library and Information Studies at Northern Illinois University. Shavit has created a historical dictionary that lists people, organizations, events, and so forth somehow involved in relations between the United States and the Soviet Union or Russia. The result is similar to the author's previous works, such as The United States in Asia (Greenwood, 1990). The main part of the book is a strictly alphabetical arrangement. The entries themselves are quite short but often cite references or further readings. As interesting as some of these entries may be, the criteria for inclusion are mystifying; thus, the book lists Abraham Lincoln but not Lenin, the Singer Sewing Machine Company but not Stalin, and the Chase National Bank but not COMECON. Several appendixes, such as the one on a ``List of Individuals by Profession and Occupation,'' are of some reference value, but many of the biographical and other entries may be found in other standard reference sources such as Who Was Who in the USSR ( LJ 5/15/72), A Biographical Dictionary of the Soviet Union 1917-1988 ( LJ 8/89), The World Almanac of the Soviet Union (Pharos, 1990), and The Great Soviet Encyclopedia (Macmillan, 1983. 3d ed.). The bibliographic essay that closes the book provides a good overall list of basic works in the history of U.S. and Soviet/Russian relations.
