Description: This is a state-of-the-art first edition outlining the current status of telehealth in the United States.
Purpose: Telehealth is a concept that has had difficulty becoming mainstream because of how it interfaces with many aspects of modern American medicine. This book makes a valiant effort to be positive when many difficulties inhibit its growth.
Audience: The audience is every person, regulator, patient, and insurance executive who follows medical issues in America.
Features: The book is divided into four major sections: Background, Clinical Services - Adult, Clinical Services - Pediatric, and Other Telehealth Systems of Health. The sections contain chapters covering topics such as rural health, high-risk obstetrics and telehealth, telepsychiatry, school and childcare center telehealth, and the role of telehealth in international humanitarian outreach. To the chapter contributors' credit, the chapters are extremely well referenced.
Assessment: This book gives a very good exposition of the state-of-the-art, but unfortunately has a cheerleading sense of what is possible without discussing a way forward with the problems of actually implementing a telehealth office visit; specifically, obtaining a secure HIPAA-compliant platform to work through, solving the problem of state-specific licensure requirements, and the Medicare/Medicaid/commercial insurance reimbursements to obtain the necessary equipment and software. Overall, telehealth concepts must mature some before it can be expected to deliver the access to care necessary for the concept to be worthwhile.
