Description: This is the sixth edition of a comprehensive overview of nursing research and evidence-based practice for undergraduate nursing students.
Purpose: The purpose is to engage undergraduate nursing students in nursing research, provide them with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to learn about the conduct and use of research, and advocate for ensuring new nurses critically appraise and use research in nursing practice. These objectives are important in contemporary nursing practice where it is imperative that nurses practice from an evidence base. The authors achieve their objectives through a succinct and organized presentation of the many facets necessary for learning research and evidence-based practice.
Audience: The audience is undergraduate nursing students, but nurses in practice who need continuing education about research and evidence-based practice also would benefit. The authors have the credentials and experience to write about these areas.
Features: The book addresses the nuts and bolts of nursing research that undergraduate nursing students need to know. It also discusses trends in nursing research, including substantive information about evidence-based practice and outcomes research. The chapters on evidence-based practice and outcomes research are rigorous, and those who teach nursing students about these areas need to consider this rigor to ensure students stay engaged with the subject. The excellent examples allow readers to apply the information, thereby enhancing understanding of what can be challenging material. Other important features include the color-coded chapters, headings and subheadings, chapter outlines, key terms, boxes, diagrams, and key concepts.
Assessment: If I were teaching nursing research to undergraduate nursing students, I would select this book for the course. The authors have taken great care to ensure it is an updated, reliable, and user friendly resource for teaching nursing research and evidence-based practice.
