Description: This well-illustrated overview of leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma has been updated based on comments and reviews of the first edition.
Purpose: It is intended to educate health professionals at all levels, as well as patients and the lay public, who might want to learn more about leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. Although this is a worthy objective, I would imagine that most patients and nonmedical readers would have a hard time understanding much of the book unless they had post-secondary education in the field of biology. It meets its objective of enlightening healthcare personnel, but even these readers would need to have some prerequisite knowledge of biology, making the book likely inappropriate for ancillary or nonlicensed staff.
Audience: Although written for a broad range of readers, the book is pitched at a level that assumes knowledge of biology that only a university or college student who took some biology classes might have. The authors do at times include bracketed alternative words for scientific terminology.
Features: The book addresses leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma thoroughly, from how they arise through treatment and possible sequelae. It uses many well-done illustrations and photographs in an attempt to explain these diseases at a level understandable to the new learner. However, many are quite graphic. If I were a patient who was newly diagnosed with any of these types of cancers, I would find many of the photographs frightening.
Assessment: This book is extremely useful to nurses, medical students, and those working in the field, as it explains these diseases quite nicely. I am not sure that patients and family members would find it very helpful unless they possessed a college-level or beyond background in biology or science. Because the photographs seem to present the worst case scenarios, they may be distressing to patients and family members.
