Overview

In Uncovered, Leah Lax tells her story-beginning as a young teen who left her liberal, secular home for life as a Hasidic Jew and ending as a forty-something woman who has to abandon the only world she's known for thirty years in order to achieve personal freedom. In understated, crystalline prose, Lax details her experiences with arranged marriage, fundamentalist faith, and motherhood during her years with the Hasidim, and explores how her creative, sexual, and spiritual longings simmer beneath the surface throughout her time there. The first memoir to tell of a gay woman who spent years in the Hasidic fold, Uncovered is the moving story of Lax's journey toward finding a home where she truly belongs.

Lax was born into a nonobservant, dysfunctional Jewish family. Her father was abusive and mentally ill, her mother was cold and distant. Lax found the acceptance and warmth she so desperately wanted in the Lubavitch Hasidic community, which she joined at age 18 and describes hear in great detail. After bringing up seven children and strictly adhering to Hasidic law, Lax felt sexually and creatively repressed. She realized that she was a lesbian and no longer found joy in the strictures of that religious life. Donna Postel's exceptional and nuanced reading brings out Lax's emotions and deep feelings. Postel's Hebrew and Yiddish pronunciations are perfect. VERDICT Highly recommended for all audio collections.—Ilka Gordon, Beachwood, OH
