Overview

These are the actual letters my father, Jay Woodrow Marsh, wrote to his family while serving in the Army during World War II from basic training through the D-Day invasion to a tiny military post office in Wales. Throughout, he kept in contact with various family members, including his parents, wife, and daughter back in Michigan; sister who served in Africa and Italy with the WACs; and brother whose experiences at Monte Cassino left a lasting impression on the whole family.

About the Author

Nancy Jane Marsh Price is the daughter of Jay Woodrow Marsh. After graduating from Michigan State University with a degree in Home Economics and Early Childhood Education, she moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico with her husband and son in the early 1970s, followed by her parents. Growing up hearing many stories about her father's wartime experiences, Nancy found herself reflecting on those stories after her father died. In the years that followed, other relatives passed on, and to continue their memory, she decided to transcribe the surviving family letters, learning more about her father-and the war that shaped him-than she ever realized.
