Overview

Brer Rabbit is the main character of the Uncle Remus stories, a likable character prone to tricks and trouble-making who is often opposed by Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear. In one tale, Br'er Fox constructs a lump of tar and puts clothing on it. When Br'er Rabbit comes along he addresses the "tar baby" amiably, but receives no response. Br'er Rabbit becomes offended by what he perceives as Tar Baby's lack of manners, punches it, and becomes stuck.

Br'er Rabbit is a trickster who succeeds by his wits rather than by brawn, provoking authority figures and bending social mores as he sees fit.

The stories have inspired at least three feature films. The first and best known is Walt Disney's 'Song of the South,' released in 1946. The film was a combination of live action and animation. Ralph Bakshi's 1975 film 'Coonskin' is a satire of the Disney film that adapts the Uncle Remus stories to a contemporary Harlem setting. 'The Adventures of Brer Rabbit' is a 2006 direct-to video production which has hip-hop influences. An 'Uncle Remus and His Tales of Br'er Rabbit' newspaper strip ran from October 14, 1945, through December 31, 1972.

About the Author

Joel Chandler Harris (December 9, 1845 – July 3, 1908) was an American journalist, fiction writer, and folklorist best known for his collection of Uncle Remus stories. Harris was born in Eatonton, Georgia, where he served as an apprentice on a plantation during his teenage years. He spent the majority of his adult life in Atlanta working as an associate editor at the Atlanta Constitution. Harris led two professional lives: as the editor and journalist known as Joe Harris, he supported a vision of the New South with the editor Henry W. Grady (1880-1889), stressing regional and racial reconciliation after the Reconstruction era. As Joel Chandler Harris, fiction writer and folklorist, he wrote many 'Brer Rabbit' stories from the African-American oral tradition and helped to revolutionize literature in the process.
