Aviation safety action message UH--1--99--ASAM--01 (TB 1--1520--210--20--42) directed inspection of allUH--1 elevators for a "CF" serial number prefix and established a mandatory removal from service date of 15 October 2000 for all elevators found with this prefix. The original mandatory removal date was basedupon the desire to remove discrepant parts from service (with minimum impact on mission operation) and projected delivery of replacement parts. After release of UH--1--99--ASAM--01 (TB 1--1520--210--20--42), the spares contractor entered bankruptcy, and another contractor was required. At this time, deliveries are beginning to occur; however, sufficient quantities will not be available to preclude significant grounding of aircraft. Newly delivered elevators will have a serial number prefix of "RQ".
