About the Author

Richard Henry Dana, Jr. (1815-1882) was an American writer, lawyer, and politician. A scion of an old colonial family, Dana served aboard a sailing ship for two years, sailing to the west coast. Upon his return, he studied at Harvard Law School, specializing in maritime law. His memoirs served as the basis for TWO YEARS BEFORE THE MAST.
