In 1962, Algeria's war of independence leads to great danger for its French inhabitants. Anne-Marie Duchemin flees to southern France, leaving her boyfriend behind in the war-torn country. While working in an orphanage, she meets Gabriella Madison, an American exchange student. Gabriella is in love with one of her former teachers, David Hoffman, who is still trapped in Algeria. Even though David is also the father of Anne-Marie's illegitimate daughter, the two women become close friends, drawn together by their strong beliefs in God. Although the unique setting makes this an enjoyable read, the book is very much one of a series (Two Crosses, Chariot Victor, 1996). Readers who haven't read the first book may find this one difficult to follow at times. Libraries may wish to purchase accordingly.
