About the Author

Lucy Bethia Walford (1845–1915) began to write, secretly, after her marriage. The success of her first novel, Mr Smith: A Part of His Life, published in 1874, led to a writing career that included forty-five full-sized novels. Her themes and settings influenced the works of Ouida, Henry James, and Edith Wharton.
