Overview

The Russian-Turkish war of 1877-78 is raging. The Balkans are on fire, the Slavic peoples have rebelled against Turkish oppression. Erast Petrovich Fandorin, who tragically lost his young wife Lizonka, in order to somehow drown out the bitterness of despair, enrolls as a volunteer in the Serbian army.
