Description: This book provides a series of protocols for working with tumor necrosis factor (TNF). Coverage is broad and includes transgenic animals.
Purpose: It is intended to offer detailed protocols for investigators studying tumor necrosis factor. Topics range from basic information about TNF and its preparation to the use of this cytokine in therapeutics. This is an important biological effector that merits focused, laboratory based coverage. In general, the goals are met.
Audience: The target audience for this book are those in the laboratory working with TNF. Users would include advanced students and more senior personnel. The editor has assembled an authoritative panel of contributors.
Features: This book offers a series of laboratory protocols for studies with tumor necrosis factor. This important cytokine has very striking biological effects and therapeutic potential in tumor treatment. Hence, this book is timely and of broad interest. The initial section covers the properties and preparation of TNF including aspects of the gene itself. Subsequent material includes direct localization, bioassays, signaling properties, and studies with transgenic animals. Each chapter provides both detailed protocols and sufficient references to primary sources. Given the breadth of responses elicited by TNF and its role in diverse pathologies, coverage of all aspects would necessitate a much larger book. Investigators who have reason to suspect TNF involvement in their biological system will find this book a good starting point for basic assays and general properties. The protocols have sufficient detail to allow implementation in any laboratory.
Assessment: This is a selective but useful overview of TNF, a very important cytokine that impinges on many areas. The inclusion of translational studies is very valuable.
