About the Author

Keith M. Gorse would like to thank all of the certified athletic trainers for their time and personal true stories for a health care profession where new experiences are never ending. Keith would also like to thank his wonderful family (Betsy, Erin, and Tyler), for their continued support through all of the years of clinical and educational athletic training.

Francis Feld would like to thank the athletic trainers that were willing to contribute to this text. We can learn from history, but all too often these episodes are lost to time because they were not told. Confucius said, “Study the past if you would define the future,” and it is our hope that the next generation of athletic trainers benefit from these experiences. Francis would also like to thank his wife Christine for her love and support.

Description: This is a great collection of short stories from athletic training professionals, new and seasoned, that show not only the value of their work, but the lessons learned through their experiences.
Purpose: The purpose is to share athletic training lessons learned when responding to injuries or emergencies with other athletic training professionals. For the nonmedical professional, the book gives a glimpse into an athletic trainer's day-to-day that is usually unnoticed.
Audience: The audience for the book includes athletic training students, interns, graduate students, young professionals, and other medical professionals who work in emergency response. It meets the needs of its intended audience and the authors are all certified athletic trainers.
Features: This is a quick and informative read. It is well organized, dividing the stories into the five domains of the athletic training profession. Each story has a short introductory paragraph to introduce readers to the setting discussed in the narrative in addition to describing the level of experience of the athletic trainer at that time. Major shortcomings of the book are the multiple typographical and grammatical errors and the sometimes too casual language used to tell the stories.
Assessment: This book would be great required reading for a senior student athletic training course. I don't recall any other similar books, and I would have enjoyed reading this before I graduated from college.
