Overview

Urochromes essentially consist of guitarist Dick Riddick, outlandish frontman Jackie Boy (also a member of no wavers the Sediment Club), and a drum machine, occasionally joined by other musicians on tour or on record. The group seem entirely bored with all of the well-worn conventions of punk rock, and their take on the genre is chaotic, biting, and refreshingly irreverent. Following a few messy live recordings and barely contained studio EPs, Trope House is Urochromes' first studio album, and while it's their most polished work to date, it's still a whirlwind attack, getting in and out in less than 20 minutes. Apart from the slower, more existential "Rumshpringa," most of the songs are speedy and jagged, pitting barbed wire riffs against thudding electronic beats. The duo deserve credit for their inventive programming, as the drums seem to match the aggression of a human drummer; just witness the blistering hardcore cover of the Lemonheads' drug anthem "Style," which seems to switch tempo a dozen times. They also cover Bikini Kill's "Resist Psychic Death" with a kid singing the lead vocals, bringing to mind the legendary preteen punks Old Skull. Tracks like "Trapped on a Planet" and "Negative Thing" are frantic and claustrophobic, yet also have a sort of good-time swagger and avoid taking themselves too seriously. ~ Paul Simpson
