Overview

The theme of this book is the methooology of various social science disciplines used by Soviet social scientists. These disciplines are area-studies and international relations, economics geography, history, philosophy, political science, and sociology. Twelve select articles from contemporary Soviet academic journals and research publications, translated from Russ.an and edited in English are included in the book The state of social sciences in the Soviet Union still remains an enigma in this country. Our colonial legacy, and above all, the language barrier have contributed to this. During the last two decades or so, Soviet social scientists have begun to employ fairly sophisticated methodological techniques and approaches that can be favourably compared with others. This book is the first venture of its kind in this country seek-mg to remove the lacunae in our academic universe and it is hoped that this will be welcomed by our academic community. The book is the collective work of a team of teachers of social sciences, Soviet studies and Russian language of the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

About the Author

RUDOLF C. HEREDIA completed his doctorate in sociology from the University of Chicago in 1979. From 1980, he has been the Director of the Social Science Centre at St. Xavier's College, Bombay, and has recently been appointed director of the research department at the Indian Social Institute, New Delhi. His publications include: Structure and Performance of College Education: An Organizational Analysis of Arts and Science Colleges in Bombay (Somaiya, Bombay, 1981); Religious and Social Change: Behavioural Responses in Bombay University (Indian Social Institute, 1984), Voluntary Action and Development: Towards a Praxis for Non-Government Agencies (Concept, 1988); Urban Housing and Voluntary Agencies: Case Studies in Bombay (Institute of Social Sciences, New Delhi, 1989). At present he is working on a study of Jesuit seminary training in South Asia.
