It is a compilation of up-to-date articles on various aspects of substance abuse disorders designed to advance the knowledge of clinicians involved in treating patients with these disorders.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a look at the "the most up-to-date reviews in the treatment of substance abuse through the use of journal source materials." The book starts off with articles dealing with substance abuse in general and then focuses on treatments for the "big four": alcohol, opiates, cocaine, and nicotine. The book largely meets its overall objective.
Audience: It is targeted at addiction specialists, psychiatrists, residents, students, and other mental health professionals. The authors are credible authorities in addiction psychiatry.
Features: This is a compilation of articles written by the various experts in the field. The book starts with general articles on substance use and the later articles go into more detail about the pharmacological and behavioral treatments of the four major substances. Special emphasis is on alcohol abuse and dependence with a review of newer psychosocial treatments as well as economic results from Project MATCH. Each article has extensive current references.
