Description:This is an up-to date review of the different modalities available to clinicians for the treatment of depression in children and adolescents.
Purpose:The authors strive to provide evidence-based, up-to-date information on the treatment of children and adolescents and provide input on how to implement a variety of interventions in a multiple clinical settings. The field of child psychiatry is always changing and updated information and useful clinical strategies are a welcome addition to this learning process. The challenge is met head on by the authors.
Audience:The authors target clinicians, including those in primary care, pediatrics, psychiatry, psychology, and other areas of mental health. However, the book could appeal to an even larger audience of medical students and even families who want to learn about the process of treatment of their children for depression. The authors are able to present the information in a simple and succinct manner.
Features:The book addresses general aspects/etiology of depressive illness in children, management of the illness (pharmacologically and psychologically, family therapy, school involvement, etc.), and problems of treating depression in special groups (e.g. cross-culturally). Multiple beautifully executed, useful charts are found throughout the book. Unique to this book is its coverage of the problems of treating special groups, such as developmentally disabled children and minorities.
Assessment:This book is enjoyable and informative at the same time, a difficult balance that is not easy toachieve. It provides the information in a user-friendly manner and is comprehensive in its coverage compared to other books on child and adolescent depression. This is a very useful addition to a practicing clinician's collection.
