Overview

Treasury of Persian Proverbs is the culmination of a decades-long effort by Ahmad Abrishami to collect, classify, and publish Persian proverbs using modern paremiological methods. For the present volume, the compiler collaborated with Mehrdad Khatib Rahbar and Beth L. Savage to present the results of his research to an international audience. All 2002 proverbs in this dictionary are grouped in these categories: proverbs, proverbs-in-verse, conventional phrases, and dialogue proverbs. Each entry appears in the original Persian, followed by a new English translation, an explanatory note on the meaning and usage of the proverb, the English equivalent proverb if found, and finally the phonetic transcription of the Persian proverb in Latin alphabet. English and Persian indexes, and a Persian prologue are included.

About the Author

Ahmad Abrishami (1924-2020) was the leading Iranian paremiologist of his generation. He was the first scholar to introduce modern methods of research and classification to the study of Persian proverbs. Drawing upon his knowledge of European languages, he also undertook comparative studies of Persian, English, French, German, and Spanish proverbs. His investigations led to the publication of eight works in the field of paremiology that comprise the Treasury of Wisdom Series.

Mehrdad Khatib Rahbar (1960) is a practicing architect with a deep interest in Persian literature and culture. As the English translator and book designer in this collaboration, his goal is to present the rich culture of his homeland to a wider world audience.

Beth L. Savage (1960) is an architectural historian, preservationist, and book editor. In editing this work, she has drawn upon her intimate knowledge of American and Persian civilizations with the goal of encouraging similar cross-cultural exchanges.

Wolfgang Mieder (1944) is University Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Vermont where he taught for fifty years and where he was chairperson of the Department of German and Russian form 1977-2008. He is also the founding editor of Proverbium: Yearbook of International Proverb Scholarship (1984ff.).
