Description: This is an edited collection of chapters on assessment and treatment of PTSD written by London-based counselors who have extensive experience with victims of trauma.
Purpose: The editor hopes to provide a book that addresses more than cognitive and verbal practice in working with clients with PTSD with the aim of integrating mind, body, and spirit.
Audience: Based on the topics, the book seems directed to a mixed audience, ranging from those who provide immediate debriefing and assessment of trauma victims to those who do more long-term therapy.
Features: The chapters attempt to integrate a variety of psychotherapeutic perspectives. Some might find the chapter on bodywork particularly interesting. One of the most important contributions of this book is its concerns and directives about what not to do to the client, with a primary focus on re-establishing trust and connection for the person for whom this has been lost. Examples of careful pacing help illustrate this message.
Assessment: The book lacks depth for the reader already familiar with treatment of PTSD, although it might offer an interesting supplement. It reads like a series of descriptions without the integration I was expecting to see. As a result, it seems a bit choppy and might be difficult for students or those with little background in the field.
