Description: Both researchers and clinicians present 65 common problem areas in this book from their unique perspectives. The research presentations follow a specific template and provide salient references. The clinician presentations include commentary on the evidence-based practice that the researcher presented. Clinicians also include pertinent references as well.
Purpose: According to the editors, the intent of the book is to "bring together researchers and clinicians to discuss their approaches to treating a clinical problem area," with the goal of helping clinicians in training appreciate both the scientific research and the the art of clinical practice, and helping researchers understand what it is like for clinicians to try and implement evidence-based strategies with clients and to learn what future research questions clinicians view as important.
Audience: The audience includes both clinicians and researchers in psychology, and the authors "hope to increase dialog and reduce the size of the chasm between these two camps." The authors are in private practice and they have enlisted contributors from the United States, Australia, Canada, Israel, Belgium, and the United Kingdom.
Features: The book begins with clinical problems related to children and adolescents, with the next part devoted to adults. Part III addresses health concerns such as asthma, eating disorders, chronic pain, insomnia, smoking cessation, diabetes, and postpartum depression, part IV considers sexuality and relationships, including dating anxiety, infidelity, and sexual dysfunction in males, and the last part covers topics related to violence and trauma, such as intimate partner violence, rape, road rage, and sexual abuse. The book is organized fairly uniformly, with researchers presenting the problem first and clinicians responding. Researchers' sections include a description of the clinical problem, prevalence data, cultural diversity issues, a summary of evidence-based treatments, and suggestions for future research. The clinicians briefly comment on the evidence-based treatment(s) described in the research section, describe a case example using the treatment, cultural diversity issues, and their suggestions for future research. The case examples in the clinician sections are very helpful in illustrating how the evidence-based treatment approach is applied, as well as the challenges.
Assessment: It is refreshing to see both a researcher's and a clinician's viewpoint. The case examples in the clinician sections are great learning tools. This is a wonderful reference for both new therapists and seasoned veterans. Researchers also will learn how clinicians use theories in the real world.
