About the Author

Brenda Scott, DNP, RN, NHDP-BC, was recognized by her peers as a Great 100 Nurse of Arkansas in 2017. For the past decade, she has honed her education craft from the clinical setting to the doctoral classroom, both in her hometown and globally through virtual learning spaces. When she is not leading faculty teams or empowering nursing students, she devotes time to support her local American Red Cross chapter.

Mindy Thompson, DNP, RN, CNE, has more than 20 years of collective experience at the bedside and in the classroom. Dr. Thompson has a proven track record of leadership and innovation in both healthcare and nursing education. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) and has been nationally recognized with various awards and scholarships. She has served in leadership positions in both STTI chapters and her region of the Oklahoma Nurses Association.

Description: This is a concise book for nurses transitioning from RN to MSN and what they can expect to experience at the MSN level. Included is a step-by-step description of the role of the MSN, the history of nursing and some of the roles the MSN nurse takes on.
Purpose: The purpose is to address the gap in the literature regarding non-advanced nursing degrees and explain the role of the MSN-prepared nurse, in contrast to the APRN, which is what most books focus on. The book meets its objectives by offering information on the different roles MSN-prepared nurses play, such as educator, leader, researcher, and advanced practice provider.
Audience: The intended audience is current nurses or potential nurses who aspire to pursue nursing at an advanced level. The book is intended as a guide for new nurses on what nursing and nursing roles are at a master's level. The authors are experienced instructors who command both academic and clinical knowledge of the field from years of teaching nursing, even though they have just recently earned their DNPs.
Features: The 16 chapters with appendixes cover different topics. The authors use scenarios and case studies to help readers understand the different concepts. The book contains brief fast facts on the history of nursing and nurse theorists and concepts of ethics. It also dwells more on MSN roles, which are divided into direct and indirect care roles. Chapter 11 is especially helpful because it digs deeper into the expectations of a master's prepared nurse and highlights the different roles of a BSN nurse and an MSN nurse. Each chapter ends with references, and while some are adequate, others have few. The few graphics lack color, which would have been helpful for visual learners.
Assessment: Students can rely on this book to decipher the roles of the MSN nurse, which are different from the roles of the RN.
