Overview

In this latest installment of the increasingly popular Cheney Duvall saga, Dr. Duvall and her male nurse, Shiloh Irons, find themselves in the midst of controversy during Reconstruction in Charleston, South Carolina. In incredible fashion, the pair almost single-handedly bring a group of unscrupulous merchants and a white supremacist group to justice. Although Cheney ostensibly grows older with each installment in the series, here she is less mature than ever before. Even though this tale lacks quality and substance, the father-daughter Morris team remains popular.

YAMorris effectively portrays the struggles to survive both physically and emotionally in Charleston, SC, during Reconstruction. Cheney Duvall, a Yankee woman doctor, visits the city, where goods are expensive and scarce and the war has not changed individual attitudes toward former slaves. Her new friends are from both races and include former Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest. Conflicts develop and the physician sees firsthand the impact of a group similar to the KKK. Leading characters are well developed in this complex plot: there are many story lines to be resolved at the end. Cheney is a feisty female who does not follow any of the typical southern behavior or standard occupation for a lady. Although this novel is in the middle of the series, the author provides sufficient background for those who have not read previous titles to follow the plot.Claudia Moore, W. T.
