About the Author

Michael Starzak is an Emritus Professor of Biophysics who spent a sabbatical year in Nice, France with his wife and two daughters. We all intended to visit new places, make new friends, learn a new language and become completely immersed in the French culture. None of us could have predicted the unusual and often humorous paths we followed to reach these goals.. With our limited budget, we opted for an old VW van that gave new meaning to "travel experience". We discovered that mastering a new language and making new friends without the language takes time. Travel, shopping and school, all things that we took for granted, require a new flexibility. The family did accomplish these goals by a variety of paths that were often unusual and humorous. The result was not only a new appreciation of French culture but a more provocative look at our own American culture,
