Description: This is a guide to common operative problems in patients with major trauma.
Purpose: A practical guide is provided for the trauma surgeon taking a badly wounded patient to the operating room, providing strategies to yield the best possible technical result. Operative planning and priorities are emphasized.
Audience: Trainees and practitioners at all levels may benefit from this guide. The authors are recognized trauma surgeons from Ben Taub Hospital, one of the leading centers for the management of penetrating trauma in the United States.
Features: This is a compilation of practical tips written as one surgeon would converse with another. After an overview of the approach to surgical management of severe injury, operative problems confronting the trauma surgeon are discussed by anatomic organization beginning with the abdomen and following with the chest, neck, and extremities. The 15 chapters are clearly written and include black-and-white illustrations that illustrate key anatomic and technical points. Texture of type and line drawings highlight summary items, which are repeated at the conclusion of each chapter. The table of contents organizes chapters according to specific organ, grouped within anatomic region. A brief concluding epilogue attempts to capture the importance and exhilaration associated with operative management of trauma. There are no references, but they are unnecessary in a book of advice such as this.
Assessment: This is an excellent quick read for residents and junior staff members managing trauma. I will give this book to my younger partners, not necessarily because this is the only way to attack these problems, but because the authors consistently and effectively articulate the importance of operative strategy in the management of major injury.
