Toby Alone

Translated into twenty-two languages.

Toby Lolness may be just one and a half millimeters tall, but he's the most wanted person in his world-the world of the great oak Tree. Toby's father has made a groundbreaking discovery: the Tree itself is alive, lowing with vital energy, and there may even be a world beyond it. Greedy developers itch to exploit this forbidden knowledge, risking permanent damage to their natural world. But Toby's father has refused to reveal his findings, causing the family to be exiled to the lower branches. Only Toby has managed to escape-but for how long? And how can he bear to leave his parents to their terrible fate?

Editorial Reviews

MAY 2011 - AudioFile

Listeners learn in the first sentence that there’s something very different about Toby Lolness: He’s a millimeter and a half tall and lives in a tree. As an oppressive regime crushes intellectual freedoms among the tree dwellers, Toby and his family find themselves on the run. Soon, young Toby is separated from them and must learn to survive. Timothée de Fombelle’s quirky story is wonderfully creative as he gives perspective to Toby’s world—insects, birds, branches, and the mysterious grass people. Peter Berkrot’s narration is as ingenious as the story itself. His best voice is reserved for Toby’s father, a geeky professor, but he also growls and snarls his way through several evildoers and oppressors. Berkrot’s narration is a model for anyone reading a compelling story to kids at bedtime. M.B. © AudioFile 2011, Portland, Maine
