Doak Justice, a 16 year old boy learns of a scheme from the other side of the tracks. It would allow Japanese industrialists to acquire all the cotton mill equipment and move it overseas. If successful the mill would close and the cotton mill workers would lose their jobs and way of life. In his adventures, Doak tests his mill village wits and skills gained from life on the mill hill. He takes on the personality of his long studied fictional hero of books, comics and movies, Frank Happiwell. Like Frank, he is able to right some wrongs and champion the underdogs on his adventures, and later using his mill village wits he foils a scheme to close the mill and saves a way of life.

It is 1950 and only the beginning of the demise of the textile industry. War torn Japan is seeking to build a textile industry with American equipment. They are buying American companies and sending the equipment to Japan.If the mill closes the mill workers and Doak's family will not only lose their jobs but their way of life. Doak recalls childhood memories and the wits and skills he has learned in his life from the hill. Doak, anxious to test his wits and skills sets out on some adventures with his sidekick and owner of the 1940 Ford.Their encounters include exposing crooked poolsharks, hauling moonshine to help a victimized elderly widow and racing in a stock car race against crooked moonshine federal revenuers.
Doak uses his most accomplished skill of pool shooting to uncover and thwart the scheme to sell the mill. Like his fictional hero, Frank Happiwell, Doak was able to champion the underdogs and right some wrongs in all his adventures.

Charles J Travis grew up on a cotton mill hill in North Carolina. He began working in the mill at 16 years of age while in high school. He is a retired Plant Manager and Vice President of several manufacturing companies. He has had a number of non-fiction works published. This is his first novel.
