CHAPTER 1

For a time during a cold, winter season, Daddy drove a milk truck. Momma woke me early and said I could go along on Daddy's route if I could get ready in time. I quickly put on my beanie cap, heavy coat, warm socks, snow boots, and snug mittens.

We climbed into the chilly cab of the milk truck before sunup. My anticipation kept me warm and alert that dim, snowy morning. This would surely be a marvelous adventure.

Daddy drove that truck as far as my eyes could see. We hooked up hoses, filling up the tanker with fresh cow's milk at each dairy farm. It was hard work, but Daddy kept driving. I was cold and tired, but Daddy kept driving. The sun rose, and the sun began to set, and Daddy kept driving.

At last, we pulled into the creamery. Daddy told me about just one more task before we could head home. It was time to test the milk and empty the load. I felt relieved as I watched Daddy and the workers climb to the top of the milk truck.

I watched from the ground below, jumping up and down in the snow to keep warm. They lifted the hatch and leaned in with their testing equipment. Itwon't be long now,I thought to myself.

Suddenly, they all peered over the edge. They were all looking at me.

What could be the matter? Had I done something wrong? Oh, please hurry!I thought.

Then Daddy started back down the long ladder alone.
