Description: Fine needle aspiration biopsy of thyroid lesions is an indispensable and widely used diagnostic technique. Thyroid FNAs are among the most common cytology specimens in most pathology departments. This update of a 2007 edition on the subject incorporates the Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology (BSRTC).
Purpose: The purpose is to cover everything from basic cytopathology concepts, fine-needle aspiration biopsy techniques, and cytopreparation through the interpretation of a complete range of cytology findings, ancillary diagnostic techniques, and the application of pathology reports to clinical management decisions.
Audience: The book is intended primarily for cytopathologists, but general pathologists and pathology residents, as well as cytotechnologists, also would find it useful.
Features: The first chapter offers a brief introduction, while the second describes different techniques of fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy. The third chapter briefly covers cytology preparation techniques. The fourth and fifth chapters summarize specimen adequacy and basic concepts of thyroid cytopathology. Chapters 6-20 cover a wide variety of thyroid lesions, from benign to malignant, including metastatic lesions to the thyroid gland. Chapter 21 covers the cytopathology of parathyroid glands. The final two chapters describe ancillary diagnostic studies and management of thyroid lesions. The book uses a relatively uniform and consistent format, covering radiological findings, gross and histological features, cytopathological features, potential diagnostic errors, and reporting format. It is richly illustrated and the overall quality of the microscopic images is great, including the images of liquid base cytology preparations, as well as traditional wet-fixed Papanicolaou-stained and air dried Romanowski-stained preparations. A number of very useful tables summarize salient cytopathological features, compare histological and cytological findings, or provide lists of differential diagnoses for different thyroid lesions. The index is comprehensive and useful, as are the references.
Assessment: For pathologists seeking a general overview of thyroid cytopathology, this atlas is an easy-to-read, quick reference. It should be widely distributed to departmental libraries and I would highly recommend it to anyone dealing with thyroid pathology and cytopathology.
