Overview

Because of its relative rarity and favorable outcome, it has not been feasible to assess medical interventions for thyroid cancer using randomized prospective trials. The approach to diagnosis and treatment relies to a great extent on information derived from retrospective studies. Overall prognosis and survival rates have been edging upward over the past two decades. This is attributed to a wider acceptance of total thyroidectomy as the primary surgical strategy. The appropriate indication of radioiodine therapy remains controversial, and physicians must be familiar with staging criteria to make educated decisions.
We are now beginning to understand the genetic mechanisms of thyroid tumor initiation and progression. There are still major challenges ahead. Thyroid Cancer provides comprehensive updates on the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of thyroid neoplasms. Although the material should be of particular interest to scholars in the field, the contributors have striven to make it of practical use to physicians who treat patients with thyroid disease.

This is a multiauthored monograph that presents a comprehensive review and update on the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of thyroid neoplasms. Although there are several books where this topic is given some consideration, such as textbooks of endocrinology and endocrine tumors, as well as Braverman's classic Werner and Ingbar's the Thyroid: A Fundamental and Clinical Text, 7th Edition (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 1996), nowhere does the topic of thyroid cancer receive as complete and thorough a discussion as it does in this book. The contributors, all noted in their field, have written a very readable text which summarizes the knowledge we have to date in the area of thyroid cancer. While presenting useful information on the epidemiology and a review of some molecular aspects of thyroid cancer, there is a wealth of information useful for the clinician treating patients with this condition. The purpose is to present an up-to-date review of thyroid cancer for both specialists in the field and other physicians who treat this disease. While intended for researchers in the field, it would be a welcome addition to the library of any endocrinologist or oncologist, as well as the internist who may oftentimes make the initial diagnosis of thyroid cancer. As with any text that takes time to be published, there are some minor issues with more recent developments not covered, such as the use of recombinant human TSH in the scanning of thyroid cancer patients. The latest references are 1997. Furthermore, a separate chapter on childhood thyroid cancer would have been helpful, rather than having it spread out over several chapters. The illustrations,especially the half tones in the pathology section, are too small and poorly reproduced. More liberal use of diagrams throughout the book would have been helpful as well. Perhaps the second edition will cover in more detail the issues of familial papillary thyroid cancer and discuss mutations in the TSH receptor that have been shown to be responsible for toxic thyroid adenomas. Despite the few minor imperfections this is a great and scholarly book that I will refer to often when I need to review the data on thyroid cancer.

This book gives a comprehensive overview of the issues related to thyroid cancer. The reader may use it to gain an understanding of current knowledge and state-of-the-art techniques as well as to guide decision making in clinical practice. As an endocrinologist facing the management of thyroid cancer daily, I enjoyed reading this book and learned from it.

The collection provides updates on the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of thyroid neoplasms. Among the topics of the 14 contributions are ionizing radiation risk assessment, cytopathology of thyroid nodules, the role of medical imaging, surgical management, the impact of therapeutic modalities on prognosis, radioiodine and external radiation therapy, and rare forms of thyroid cancer. Although the material is primarily for scholars in the field, the contributors have strived to make it of practical use to physicians that treat patients with thyroid disease. Annotation c.
