Description: This is a comprehensive reference covering normal lung anatomy and development, and pathologic conditions, including cytology, specimen handling, and special techniques. This third edition contains multiple additions and updates to the previous edition, published 10 years ago, reflecting the increasing knowledge in areas such as molecular biology, infectious disease, and interstitial pneumonias.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide updated information and the most recent classification systems in accordance with the changes that have occurred in pulmonary pathology since the last edition was published. Increasing understanding, in the field of molecular biology in particular, and in changing classification systems necessitate the release of an updated edition to provide an accurate, up-to-date text, and this book succeeds in meeting those goals.
Audience: Although written primarily for pulmonary pathologists, the book is equally well suited for general pathologists, pulmonologists, and residents looking for a comprehensive reference.
Features: The book covers normal lung anatomy and development, including molecular pathology, specimen handling and special techniques, as well as pathologic conditions including infectious, inflammatory, neoplastic, and transplant pathology. This is a good source for in-depth information not found in other books, such as special techniques for fixing and examining tissue and comprehensive chapters on conditions typically diagnosed clinically, and thus only briefly mentioned in other pathology texts, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. There are a few pages of color plates, but the one minor shortcoming of the book is that the vast majority of pictures are black and white. Color illustrations and photomicrographs would have been a very helpful feature.
Assessment: This is one of the most in-depth books available in the field of pulmonary pathology, covering a broad scope of conditions in great detail. It will be very useful as a comprehensive reference, and is probably geared most toward pulmonary pathologists because of the level of detail, but is also a helpful reference for general pathologists, pulmonologists, and residents. Because the last edition was published 10 years ago, this new edition provides updated information to reflect the increasing knowledge and new classification systems in the field of pulmonary pathology.

"With the large number of excellent textbooks that currently address pulmonary pathology, one could question whether another text in this field is necessary. In the case of Thurlbeck's Pathology of the Lung, the answer is clearly and enthusiastically yes. This is the third edition of this now classic text, and, in my opinion, the best. The back cover refers to the text as the "bible" of pulmonary pathology...if by "bible" one means a source of truth that can be turned to repeatedly for new insights, then this metaphor is wholly appropriate. The result is that each chapter is filled with a wealth of evidence-based information, and written in the voice and from the perspective of an established expert.
