Overview

Inspired by the works of Maya Angelou, Tupac Shakur & Langston Hughes, Through Blood & Becoming is a raw, and authentic poetry collection about a woman's experience with childbirth, postpartum depression, and motherhood. This collection takes you on a journey through fear, sadness, and depression to relief, resilience, and becoming. In this collection, author/poet Rae Scott shares her birth stories and tackles important but unconventional topics such as postpartum depression, miscarriage, and stillbirths from a black woman's perspective in an effort to advocate for advancements in the maternal health care system.

About the Author

Rae Scott is a poet, mother, and wife from Baltimore, MD. She left her career in the financial industry to focus on her growing family which led her to rediscover her passion for reading and writing. Rae began her Bookstagram account in January 2021, with the intention to find connections and inspiration that would help her reach her goal of publishing her first book.

After two traumatic childbirth experiences, Rae was diagnosed with postpartum depression that was heightened by the isolation caused by the pandemic and being a stay-at-home mom. She channeled that loneliness and depression into writing poetry which evolved into her upcoming book “Through Blood & Becoming”.

Rae hopes this book brings awareness to the inadequacies in the maternal health care system and advocates for an improved system of support for struggling mothers and mothers-to-be.
