About the Author

Andrea Portes is the bestselling novelist of the critically lauded adult novel, Hick, her debut that has been made into a feature film. Andrea grew up shuffled around between such disparate locales as Nebraska, Brasília, Texas, Rio de Janiero, Baltimore, North Dakota, California, Wisconsin, and North Carolina. Finally, she was granted relief from this nomadic existence when she was accepted to Bryn Mawr College. She attended on full scholarship and later graduated cum laude, with a major in English literature. She then earned her MFA from the University of California at San Diego. After her relentless education, she moved to the neighborhood of Echo Park in Los Angeles, where she spent years mostly getting into trouble. It was in this period of vague nothingness that Andrea penned her debut novel, in longhand in three notebooks.

Lauren Ezzo, an Earphones Award-winning narrator, is a commercial voice talent and Chicago–based actor and graduate of Hope College. She has acted in Peppermint Creek Theatre Company’s world premiere of Or You Could Kiss Me. Her narrations have placed her on several “Best of the Year” lists, including AudioFile’s Best Audiobooks of the Year list. In 2018, she was part of a full cast of narrators nominated for the prestigious Audie Award for Best Original Work.

GR 9 UP-Daffodil is ready for college in the fall, if only she can make enough money to afford it. Then, a golden opportunity drops in her lap. An old couple needs someone to house sit for them during the summer and supervises some renovations. Free room and a large paycheck. What could possibly be the downside? And then, of course, things start to go wrong. At first it starts small, like objects mysteriously showing up in places they should not be. Then the construction workers laboring over a secretive project that never gets any closer to being done in the backyard start getting aggressive. And something is scratching at night, wanting to get in. And a neighbor keeps inviting herself over unannounced. For all that the title claims, something spooky is happening in this house. This is a horror book that pokes fun at itself and the genre, managing to be both spooky and funny. Daffodil's voice is full of self-deprecating humor and her analysis of herself and her situation will make readers laugh. Her character is lively, sarcastic, and fun to read. Tension builds as readers are walked through an evolving romance in her past, with no sign of the boy in her current life, and there is an interesting twist at the end. Despite growing signs of paranormal activity, Daffodil Turner refuses to abandon her housesitting job.

It’s the summer before college, and Daffodil needs money to fund her new life—the one she’s hoping will be better than her old one. Feeling strangely compelled by the sight of clusters of daffodils, she jumps off the train on her way to the Main Line, Philadelphia, campus and finds herself at the door of a slightly intimidating old house. Luckily, the owner has a job for her: overseeing a renovation project while he’s gone. This suits Daffodil perfectly; she can hide in her attic bedroom and not feel pressured to pretend to be happy. But soon Daffodil’s nights spent binge-watching Ancient Aliens are interrupted; she feels a dark force watching her. Another night, a scratching noise grows louder, seemingly aware of her presence—and that’s just the beginning. As eerie occurrences veer into violence, Daffodil rationalizes away the idea that anything’s wrong. She needs this job; if she doesn’t get paid, she has to go home to Nebraska. She’d rather face all the horrors the house can muster, as well as painful memories from her past, than surrender. Daffodil’s first-person narration works against the story; the horrors read as told, not shown, and her extreme denial grows tiresome. The final twist reads as both obvious and in conflict with Daffodil’s fiercely independent character. All characters are White.

Another clichéd haunted house story. (Paranormal thriller. 14-18)
