Overview

In this tantalizing thriller from a #1 New York Times bestselling author, a woman uncovers lifelong secrets as she searches for the truth behind her father's involvement in a heist gone wrong.

Twenty years ago in the dead of night, four seemingly random individuals pulled the ultimate heist and almost walked away with half a million dollars. But by daybreak, their plan had been shot to hell. One of them was in the hospital. One was in jail. One was dead. And one got away with it.

Arden Maxwell, the daughter of the man who disappeared all those years ago-presumably with the money, after murdering his accomplice-has never reconciled with her father's abandonment of her and her sister. After countless personal setbacks she decides to return to her family home near mysterious Caddo Lake, and finally get answers to the many questions that torment her. Little does she know, two of her father's co-conspirators-a war hero and a corrupt district attorney-are watching her every move.

Ledge Burnet, a rebellious teen at the time of the heist, evaded his jail sentence by enlisting in the army. Now he's back in town to care for his ailing father-and to keep his eye on the county's corrupt district attorney, whom he suspects was the real murderer. Although the two are bound to silence because of the crime they committed together, each has spent years waiting and hoping that the other will make a fatal misstep. But the arrival of their elusive accomplice's daughter, Arden, who may know more about the missing money than she's telling, sets them both on red alert. She ignites Ledge's determination to expose the D.A.'s treachery . . . and sparks a desire he wishes to deny.

Arden Maxwell, the heroine of this taut novel of romantic suspense from bestseller Brown (Outfox), returns to Penton, Tex., after an absence of 20 years. In 2000, Arden was in grade school when she and her college-age sister, Lisa, left town, following their father’s disappearance (their mother was dead). Many of the townspeople believe that their father got away with a large sum of money, stolen from a local business. After Arden hires contractor Ledge Burnet to remodel her rundown family home, she learns that the tall, muscular builder has insider information about her father and the theft. Chapters relating Arden and Ledge’s pursuit of the truth behind the robbery alternate with descriptions of what occurred 20 years earlier told from the thieves’ points of view. The stakes rise as Arden becomes the target for someone who suspects her of having access to the two-decades-old stolen cash. A final twist will catch readers by surprise. Good pacing, smooth prose, inventive action scenes, and a touch of hot romance combine to make this a winner. Brown consistently entertains. Agent: Maria Carvainis, Maria Carvainis Agency. (Aug.)

Did Arden Miller's father take the money and run when he vanished 20 years ago after participating in the heist of a half million dollars, and was he responsible for the murder of one of his accomplices? With those questions in mind, Arden returns to her hometown, where the remaining thieves eye each other warily.

OCTOBER 2020 - AudioFile

Narrator Kyf Brewer meets the challenge of voicing a full cast of characters over two time periods. Twenty years ago, three individuals, who were being manipulated by a bully, committed a robbery. By the end of that night, one of the thieves was dead, one was in jail, and one disappeared with a half-million dollars and was accused of murder. Now the younger daughter of the bandit who vanished returns to town, and long-held secrets unravel. Brewer voices Ledge, the bad boy turned hero, in a fitting deep, rough voice. However, he is less successful at differentiating the female voices. Nonetheless, he sustains the quick pace through the twists and turns to keep listeners engaged through the surprising conclusion.
