About the Author

Maura D. Shaw is the author of several books for young readers, including the award-winning Ten Amazing People: And How They Changed the World (SkyLight Paths); the historical novel Owl's Journey and Gandhi: India's Great Soul. Her nondenominational handbook of Earth-honoring activities for parents and children, Celebrating the Great Mother, is popular with families and groups.

Stephen Marchesi has created numerous drawings for textbooks, magazines and picture books, including Martin Luther King, Jr. and the March on Washington; Meet Abraham Lincoln; Mary McLeod Bethune: Voice of Black Hope and Mars: The Red Planet. Gr 3-5-These slim titles offer information about the childhood of these spiritual leaders, but mostly, readers will learn about their lifestyles, nonviolent philosophies, and actions. The author incorporates quotes from the men; Thich Nhat Hanh also includes poems written by the Buddhist monk. She encourages readers to participate in activities in the spirit of the philosophies of these influential, peaceful leaders. Gandhi recommends that children recycle broken crayons, since Gandhi believed it was an act of violence to throw away anything that still had a use. Thich Nhat Hanh suggests that they write poetry about something that they would like to see changed, and how to help that happen by peaceful means. Both volumes invite readers to teach others by becoming good examples. However, younger students may find the texts quite challenging and older readers may find them choppy and juvenile.
