Thermodynamics Study Book: First and Second Law Thermodynamics taught by a professor with 40+ years experience at teaching eager minds
This book is a clearly written, carefully organized travel through the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics leading to numerous industrial applications. Students of all disciplines will find the development of the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics very useful material presented in a new light. Detailed problems with full explanations are solved in each chapter of the book. Extensive data in the appendix is useful not only for studies in this book, but also for engineering practice. Beyond development of the First and Second Laws, applications covered in the book include industrial process equipment such as heat exchangers, compressors and turbines and important cycles such as the steam Rankine cycle, vapor compression cycle, Otto and Diesel engines and others.

Professor Price taught thermodynamics for over 40 years before retiring in 2021. He grew up in Texas attending Lamar University (BS, 1975) and Rice University (PhD, 1979) before starting his academic career at Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge. In 2000, he retired from LSU and joined The University of Tulsa (TU) where he was Professor and Chairman for 20 years. He retired from TU in 2021 to focus on writing and on his family and hobbies. He currently lives in Fulshear, Texas.

About the Author

Geoffrey L. Price was educated as a chemical engineer in his home state of Texas, attending Lamar University (BS, 1975) and Rice University (PhD, 1979). Upon graduation from Rice, he took his first appointment as assistant professor at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge (LSU) in 1979. There, he was promoted through the professorial ranks to Robert Hughes Harvey Endowed Professor. He retired from LSU in 2000 to take an appointment as professor and chairman of the chemical engineering department at the University of Tulsa (TU). Dr. Price chaired the department during times of many milestones. He helped get the endowment which led to the department being designated a school at TU, and during his tenure as chairman, the University established both the Buthod and Rumley Chairs in the department. The department navigated four successful accreditation processes with ABET, the premier engineering accreditation agency during his tenure as chair. In 2020, he was the Rumley Chair and Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Russell School of Chemical Engineering, and he retired from TU at the end of 2020. He currently is an emeritus professor at both TU and LSU, and was a registered professional engineer in the State of Texas prior to his retirement.

During his time in academics, Dr. Price taught thousands of students studying in numerous disciples including chemical, petroleum, mechanical, and electrical engineering, chemistry, physics and engineering physics. He taught courses in thermodynamics, reactor design and kinetics, polymers, catalysis and other courses on both the graduate and undergraduate levels. His book, “Thermodynamics Study Book” is a natural outgrowth of his 40+ year teaching career. He is the author of over 200 publications, patents, technical papers, and conference proceedings.
