About the Author

Mary Ann McColl, PhD, MTS is a Professor in Rehabilitation Therapy and Associate Director of the Centre for Health Services and Policy Research at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario. She is also the Academic Lead of the Canadian Disability Policy Alliance.

Mary Law, PhD, FCAOT is a Professor Emeritus in the School of Rehabilitation Science, Occupational Therapy Program and co-founder of the CanChild Centre for Childhood Disability Research at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario.

Debra Stewart, MSc is an Associate Professor in the School of Rehabilitation Science, Occupational Therapy Program and an a investigator with the CanChild Centre for Childhood Disability Research at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario.

This book begins with a discussion of the uses and applications of occupational therapy theory, then presents an extensive annotated bibliography of occupational therapy theory, incorporating material from books and journals. Significant developments in occupational therapy theory over the past 25 years are classified and discussed, and a taxonomy of occupational therapy theory is presented, which organizes theory into a system consistent with how occupational therapists think about occupation, people, and environment. In this second edition, opening chapters are expanded to better explain how theory may be used in occupational therapy, and the concepts of occupation change and therapeutic applications are addressed. Description: Occupation, which is at the core of the occupational therapy profession, continues to be a complex concept for many students, professionals, and clients to understand and define. Historically, the literature has been unclear and contradictory. This is the third edition of a book that clearly and logically explains the concept of occupation and the popular models taught and used across occupational therapy settings and institutions. The authors describe occupational therapy concepts and theoretical models using metaphors and extensive literature, both historical and current, to help practitioners and students understand occupation and how to effectively use theory in everyday practice. The previous edition was published in 2003.
Purpose: The key purpose is to offer occupational therapy students and practitioners a clear and concise resource on the complex nature of human occupation and the conceptual theories that guide occupational therapists throughout the occupational therapy (OT) process. The authors meet the objectives, providing in-depth descriptions of the conceptual models of OT practice.
Audience: The audience includes occupational therapy students, researchers, academicians, and clinicians. The book targets no one specialty area and the information is applicable to all occupational therapy professionals and students in all settings. All authors are currently academicians in rehabilitation programs.
Features: The book addresses the tools and knowledge needed to fulfill the role of an occupational therapist; occupation and the determinants and consequences of occupation; and occupational models of practice. These topics are well supported with extensive literature and discussion to help readers grasp the real meaning of occupation along with a guide to delivering occupation-based treatment. The authors use metaphors to help readers better understand theory and how to formulate services around occupation. Ultimately, having a better understanding of these areas of practice will promote more use of occupation-based theory in practice and will help current and future OT practitioners deliver services more effectively using occupation as the therapeutic tool. The inclusion of both national and international peer-reviewed literature showcases the evolution of OT practice and theory. Unique features include the database of articles on occupation dating from 2012 back to 2000, eliminating the time clinicians would have to spend researching and gathering this data. In chapter 7, the interesting discussion of how OT and occupation were defined early on enables readers to compare how the older literature differs from the contemporary literature.

For academicians, it offers a condensed way to help students conceptualize theory and models and understand what occupation is all about. The authors do a fantastic job of clarifying the differences among the models and focusing on the unique aspects of how occupation promotes the health and wellbeing of all individuals. Most importantly, the extensive literature review concentrates an abundance of information on OT models and occupation, which helps to further solidify what OT practitioners do and why we do it. There are other books that address these models. Conceptual Foundations of Occupational Therapy, 4th edition, Kielhofner (F. A. Davis, 2009), is comparable in that it offers visuals with textboxes that help explain areas such as theories and models. However, although it includes more coverage of the various models used in OT practice, Theoretical Basis of Occupational Therapy covers the models that are most researched and used in OT practice. Willard and Spackman's Occupational Therapy, 12th edition, Schell et al. (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2012), addresses the same models that this book does, and includes learning objectives, visuals, and case studies, along with an elaborate amount of information, which can confuse readers. This book, on the other hand, condenses this information, providing more clarity and enabling readers to more easily grasp the gist of each model.
