About the Author

Barbara Cook, a 2011 Kennedy Center honoree and member of the Theater Hall of Fame, has starred in eighteen Broadway shows. She received a Tony Award nomination in 2010 for Sondheim on Sondheim, fifty-three years after winning a Tony for her performance in The Music Man. Now in her late eighties, she continues to perform as a cabaret and concert singer.

Tom Santopietro is the author of five books, including The Sound of Music Story and the New York Times Editors’ Choice Considering Doris Day.

"Dream of now, dream of then" are the opening lyrics to "Will I Ever Love You," the iconic ballad from the Broadway musical The Music Man, in which the effervescent Cook originated the role of Marian the Librarian. Most librarians have a love/hate relationship with this role and its stereotypical librarian, but the woman who formed our first impression of the character is nothing less than a musical legend. At 89, she reflects back on more than half a century of life on the Broadway stage. She struggled with depression and alcoholism, almost ending her career, but reemerged in the early 1970s as a cabaret and concert performer. Her insights and reminiscences of names that are synonymous with Broadway, such as Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein, and Robert Preston, are priceless, as is her feisty attitude toward life.
