Overview

Originally published in 1974 and runner-up in the first-ever Georgette Heyer Historical Novel Prize, The White Queen of Middleham has recently been republished by Romaunce Books and tells the story of Anne Neville, younger daughter of Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, and wife to King Richard III.

As a delicate child, Anne is often sick and confused. Her world is one where almost all women are ruled by their menfolk. Remaining ignorant of the great events occurring around her adds to her feelings of inadequacy, and she contemplates entering the Church. But then she meets Richard, Duke of Gloucester and falls in love. As her father's fortunes rise and fall Anne's life becomes a hard journey from one refuge to another; an enforced, loveless marriage to the precocious Edward, Prince of Wales and on his death at Tewkesbury, Anne is placed in George, Duke of Clarence's care. She is hidden as a London kitchen maid, but is rescued by Richard, and at last her life changes for the better.

About the Author

In spite of her early passion for the 17th century, Lesley’s first three novels and a work of non-fiction were about the 15th century. Her story of Anne Neville was the second of five historical novels that she wrote, and the only one of her books that was published before her death.

“The White Queen” was its original title when it was published by The Bodley Head in 1978, 32 years before Philippa Gregory borrowed the title for her recent novel about the other White Queen, Elizabeth Woodville. Gregory also wrote a book about Anne Neville (‘The Kingmaker’s Daughter’), though her vision of Anne was very different. So to avoid confusion, Lesley’s novel has been re-edited and republished with a slightly changed title - ‘The White Queen of Middleham’ – because, for Anne and Richard Plantaganet, Middleham Castle was home.

This book was runner-up in the first-ever Georgette Heyer Historical Novel Prize in 1978 and was published in hard-back and paper-back: the only book published by the time of her death.

Lesley wrote three novels set in the 15th century, the trilogy “Sprigs of Broom”:
“Sons of York” about Edward IV’s young sons and his (imaginary) mistress. What did happen to the Princes in the Tower?
“The White Queen” about Anne Neville, Richard III’s wife. What was Anne, of whom history tells us so little, really like? Was Richard a bloody tyrant and wicked uncle?
“Perkin” about the Pretender Perkin Warbeck. Who was he - a son of Edward IV?

‘’Perkin’’ and ‘’Sons of York’’ are due to be published in late 2015.
