Born in the small town of Clintwood, in southwestern Virginia's coalfields, Adam Lawler is the son and grandson of coal miners. His family instilled a love for reading and leaning in him, and that love was fostered by many great educators who guided him along. He graduated high school at age sixteen, finishing second in his clas. Afterwards, he moved to the coast of North Carolina for a couple of years and earned an Associate's degree.
Missing his native Appalachian mountains, Adam continued his education at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, where he earned a B.A. in History with a minor in Psychology. He continued his education by earning a M.A. in Appalachian Studies, solidifying his status as a professional hillbilly. Needing to earn money to raise a growing fmaily, he went to work in the retail automotive industry, holding several sales and finance management positions over a twenty-year career. He also taught Western Civilization and Southern Culture at Wilkes Community College.
Adam is an avid ham radio operator, holding the callsign WK4P. He has been actively involved in the hobby for over twenty years and supports our sailors and marines by serving in the Navy-Marine Corps Military Auxiliary Radio System (MARS) program.
After college, Adam settled in West Jefferson, North Carolina where he raised three children; Cyndi, a fourth grade teacher, Wayne, a glass artist, and Rachel, an art historian. He is currently an empty nester and live in Jefferson, North Carolina with his guide dog and best friend, a Doberman Pinscher named Freyja.
