"The Wedding Cup" is an historical drama set during Hannibal's War with Rome about Sophonisba, daughter of a Carthaginian general. Two royal Numidian rivals in North Africa loved her. As the Roman general, Scipio, invades Africa to defeat Carthage, Sophonisba was forced to a terrible choice, being torn between her love for one, Massinisa, and her patriotic duty when Carthage ordered her to marry the other, Syphax, to gain him as ally against Rome. The story was well-known in the Renaissance and served as the basis for plays, operas, and paintings. Three shorter and lighter works are included: a dialogue between God and Moses on how to write Genesis; a variation of the Theseus and Ariadne myth, and a Greenwich Village date which goes awry.
