About the Author

A dual U.S./Canadian citizen, Rachel Boehm has lived on both sides of the border, but her childhood years in Nova Scotia made a lasting impression. Rachel has worked in the field of communications and marketing with numerous non-profit and public-sector organizations. She is passionate about writing and its power to effect social change. Having returned to Nova Scotia in 2003, Rachel and her husband and children now live surrounded by lakes and rocky hills in beautiful Fall River, just outside of Halifax.

Mary Jane Gerber loves children and has illustrated many books for them. She lives in Orangeville, Ontario, with her family and a Sheltie named Duncan.

A mom recites all the ways she will love her little baby in a fairly standard rhyming text. "I'll love you with seashores, / I'll love you with pails, / I'll love you with sand castles / and hiking on trails." Text and some paintings are set within round medallions, reinforcing the cozy comfort of the sentiment conveyed. This mom and baby (and their collie, never mentioned but in virtually every picture) enjoy snuggling with books, playing outdoors and seeing the sights. Both mother and child have olive skin and curly, textured hair, potentially extending the book's reach across ethnic groups. The muted palette and busy images (particularly the borders of the text medallions) skew this book toward older toddlers. It hardly stands out, but it's a wholesome and wholehearted reiteration of the best of the mother-child relationship. (Board book. 2-3)
