About the Author

Mary Ann Vitale was born in Cinisi, Sicily. As a young girl, she loved reading books even in the dark. Unfortunately during that time, not too many books were available. At the age of fifteen, she crossed the Atlantic Ocean by ship and moved to St. Louis, MO with her large family of nine. Even though she did not know the English language, at the age of sixteen she enrolled in Cosmetology school and became a licensed hair stylist. She moved to Woodhaven, MI and owned a beauty salon for many years. Later in life, she attended college where she learned the skills to write her own children's stories. The author is married and has three grown children and two grandchildren. While she was babysitting, Vitale was inspired by God to write her first story for her granddaughter. Soon after, she wrote many other stories which she plans to publish in the near future. The author loves her family, church, gardening and traveling. The Water Lily Fairy is her first published children's book.

Look for her sequel "The Water Lily Fairy at the Ice Cream Palace" coming soon.

Chapter One

There was once a beautiful pond in a small village called Corleone. There were many water lilies floating on the water among large green leaf pads. Some lilies were white, some pink and some purple. One day a group of fairies flew over the mountains into the village, but one of them was curious and remained behind.

Some children were playing near the pond and enjoying the pretty flowerbeds; others were making noises and chasing butterflies. The little fairy did not want to be seen by them. She hid in the pond among the lilies and the green leaf pads. The fairy stood between three leaves; she lifted up her petal skirt, bowed her head down and looked just like a closed lily bud. Nobody noticed any difference. She liked the idea of hiding as a water lily bud and decided to explore the little world around her.

Early in the morning she pulled down one of the petals of her skirt and peeked her head through it. Nobody was around the pond. She shook down all her petals and tiptoed on the green leaf pads. "Good morning!" she said to all the lilies and they all blossomed at the sound of her voice. "Now," she said, "Where do I start first?" As she was flying, she noticed many children were poor. They did not have any toys and their houses were not beautiful. "I want to do something good for these children and the people of this village," she said. "Life is not a bed of roses here. Hey! This is a good idea. I know what I'll do."

Next dawn, while the whole village was still asleep, the water lily fairy picked a bunch of roses and shook all their petals onto the streets. When the people woke up, they all wondered what happened and who dropped all the rose petals on the streets. Regardless, they all loved the change in their village. Some children were saying, "It would have been nice if they were candies and chocolates." The little fairy heard them and thought, "Hey! That is a good idea."
