The bath was huge. A giant vat with a broad platform built around it to allow us to sit on the edge if we wanted to. Five steps led up to the platform. I couldn’t imagine the number of servants lugging pales of hot water up flights of stairs that had been required to fill it. Bubbles floated on it and the room was filled with the soft scent of pine.
“I had to find a scent suitable to both of us,” he said, lifting my robe from my shoulders and letting it fall to the floor.
I walked forward as if in a trance while behind me he disrobed. I stepped into the large barrel shaped bath, to which a small stairs gave entrance, down into wonderfully hot water. I wondered if James had instructed that a gigantic wine barrel be cut in two to form the tub which could easily sit half a dozen people. The water came to my waist. I moved over to make room for him to enter and felt an outcropping at about knee level which turned out to be a place where I could sit. Never in my wildest imagination could I have dreamed of a bath like this.
“How ever do they empty this?” I asked in wonder.
“There is a pipe with a faucet. It runs to a tank in the basement and from there to the sewers. There are two stages so that the gas from the sewers are kept out of the house,” He said.
“Did you design it?” I asked in wonder.
“I did,” he said. He obviously enjoyed my admiration which was not hard to bestow.
“It’s quite wonderful,” I said quietly. And what are those pipes?” I asked indicating two long, slender pipes that came down from the ceiling.
“They are servant savers,” he laughed. “Water is pumped to two very large tanks on the roof. One I cause to be heated. I use the water to fill this tub. As you will soon see, we can keep the water hot over time simply by turning on the hot water tap and letting more hot water into the tub. I suppose you were wondering how many men it took to carry all this water upstairs.”
“I was actually,” she replied.
“It takes one. One to pump the water from a holding tank in the basement and to turn on the fire to heat the water,” he said. “One day every house will have something like this, but right now it is a luxury.”
“Why is it so very big? At least half a dozen people would fit comfortably in here,” I said. I turned and realized he had come softly behind me and was standing inches from my back.
“I thought one day we might want to give a tub party,” he said in that rumbling way that made my stomach vibrate. Then he laughed at my shocked expression. Still chuckling, he enfolded me in his arms and captured my astonished lips with his.
Once again I was swept away by the vibration of his lips. I opened my mouth to his probing tongue as if it was the most natural thing to do instead of something I had learned about twelve hours ago. I closed my eyes as we stood in the warm water, pressed against each other, running our hands up and down each other’s backs.
