The Velvet Fleece
THE VELVET FLEECE

When their mark in a Miami con drops dead, Silky figures it's time to head West to Hart City on the California coast. And since Rick is their point man, he gets the job of setting up the fix. It looks like a piece of cake, ripe for the serving. All he has to do is pose as the best friend of a rich young war widow's dead husband, and he's in. With the rubes in this town, Rick figures it's a cinch.

Of course, there's Silky's girlfriend, Tory, who's bored with the boss and only has eyes for Rick. She's supposed to be in Havana, but Tory is no fool. She's followed Rick out west. And how he's got his hands full trying to keep the widow and Tory apart, while working a con of his own, only this time he's going to try to con Silky...

This release is the third in a new series of books that were turned into classic film noirs. The Velvet Fleece was filmed as Larceny in 1948 with John Payne, Joan Caulfield, Dan Duryea and Shelley Winters.

About the Author

Lois Christine Eby was born November 20, 1908 in Wabash, Indiana; her older first cousin John Chester Fleming was born April 27, 1906 in nearby Elkhart, Indiana. When Eby was a young child her family moved to Southern California, where she eventually became a film studio secretary and scriptwriter. Fleming stayed in Indiana until after WWII, when he moved his family to L.A. Eby got her start as co-writer for the 1937 screwball comedy Too Many Wives and Republic’s 1938 western serial The Lone Ranger. With Fleming in L.A., he and Eby started writing together in 1944 and turned out six novels, most of them mysteries. After their collaboration ended in 1952, Eby went on to write a series of children’s books. Fleming stayed in the film industry and died in his late 50s in Manhattan on January 31, 1964. Eby lived to be 89, and passed away in Lakeland, Florida on September 3, 1998.
