The Vanished
The way of life and the culture in this story once existed and since have vanished; a new country and a different society have emerged from the old Korea. The turbulent years of this transformation swept many individuals and families into complete destruction. Some are still remembered, while others disappeared from all accounts. Embon, born into a aristocratic family during the Japanese occupation of Korea, is thrown into jail for nationalistic activities. Released after coming down with tuberculosis, he decides to join his former classmates in Shanghai to work for the banned Korean Provisional Government. Although he is not yet fully recovered from his illness, he joins the fight and witnesses the violent deaths of his friends and other young Koreans during their pursuit of Korean independence from Japan.
