Overview

The Constitution of the United States is the supreme law of
the United States of America. It is the framework for the
organization of the United States government and for the
relationship of the federal government with the states, citizens,
and all people within the United States. The Constitution
creates the three branches of the national government and
specifies the powers and duties of each. This graphic novel
adaptation of the country’s greatest work includes all of the
text from the original document as well as a narrative that
brings to life the founding fathers’ work.

About the Author

Nadja has been a words-nerd all her life.  She speaks English, German, Italian, and Spanish (with varying degrees of fluency), can teach Taekwondo classes in Korean, and is currently working on expanding her French vocabulary.  Since receiving a Bachelor's degree in Creative Writing at the University of Minnesota, she has served as the office thesaurus, dictionary, translator, and spell-checker in every one of her day jobs.  She wrote her first terrible novella at the age of eight, and is now focused on writing comics and novels for young adults.  Her work can be seen for free in the online graphic novel, Impure Blood (www.impurebloodwebcomic.com), which is drawn by her soon-to-be husband.  Other projects she has scripted for Round Table include Everything's Okay (Sept 2011), Delivering Happiness (March 2012), and an adaptation of The U.S. Constitution (March 2012). Aside from a love of a good story with pretty pictures, they share a house, a cat, a turtle, and a belief that more people should embrace their inner nerd.

Driven by a contemporary steampunk flare, this graphic novel adaptation of the constitution should be a required read for anyone interested in learning about U.S. democracy and civic procedures. I can’t decide who I am going to give a copy to first, my niece (who is 13), my mom (who is 62), my neighbor (who is 83), my favorite kid (who is 4), my best friend and his wife (who are 30 and 32), or my undergraduate teacher candidates (who are mostly in their mid 20s).

Reading about the Constitution in comic form helps kids and others understand a very complicated document that is densely packed with organization, rules, and procedures. This comic would be a good guide to have along with any study of the Constitution. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in United States history, or to teachers or families wanting to teach kids about our government in an entertaining way. I will be using it with my own kids whenever we study United States history.
